South Tempe Water Treatment Plant (STWTP)
Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) and Other Improvements

Wilson is designing the STWTP - GAC and other improvement projects to remove total organic carbon (TOC) from surface water. Some key challenges related to the TOC removal facility include coordinating plant shutdowns, managing the intermediate pump station, and adapting to temperature variations. As the City heavily relies on both of its surface water treatment plants to meet its water demand, it is critical to minimize the shutdown duration of the STWTP while integrating the new GAC contactors and ancillary facilities (intermediate pump station and backwash pump station) into the existing system. Wilson's design approach would allow most of the construction effort to occur independently of the existing plant operation, resulting in minimal downtime for tie-ins.
Relevant Project Features:
-
Future construction efforts will occur independently of the existing plant operation with minimal downtime for tie-ins.
-
Unlike a typical surface water plant, STWTP also receives water from wells, such as groundwater, and is capable of treating and blending well water with surface water.
